One of the biggest examples I can think of this was the backlash towards the prequels in the early 2000s.

People who considered themselves "real Star Wars Fans" were actively hateful towards George Lucas.

They were fans of the IP, not the creator... and they saw the prequels as betraying the IP.

If you want to tell a story with a drastically different tone, are you able to do so, even in a setting that might not be conducive towards it? Should you just make a new setting in that case?
