OP here. This thread has been nice, thanks guys. My plan B the entire time has been to say "fuck it all" if I didn't get the PhD, so now I'll travel to Japan and work for a year. Maybe I'll come back and apply for more PhDs and maybe I'll find something else to do. I got my Master's a few days before I turned 25, and I'm 26 now. There's still time, I suppose, but I would have liked to get the PhD position now, while I'm super motivated and focused.
