I'm considering only teaching symbolism in the context of symbolist text, and then explaining its shortcomings and why it's not really used past high school. But, I know I'll get a bunch of students who will want to apply it to everything we read, and I'm brainstorming ways to sit them down, smack them across the face, and tell them to consider another field of criticism.

I would take the ring and then use the unnatural long life it'd give me to extend the third age indefinitely so I could continually deconstruct the supposed "Evil" the Ring "possessed", eventually exposing the error in subscription to presence of the history of Middle Earth

Which works by Derrida should I read if want to get the main ideas?

I already know /lit/ doesn't like him, but that's not what I'm asking. Please contain yourselves.

Post-modernism is arguably the most depressing philosophy ever to spring from the western mind. It is difficult to talk about post-modernism because nobody really understands it. It’s allusive to the point of being impossible to articulate. But what this philosophy basically says is that we’ve reached an endpoint in human history. That the modernist tradition of progress and ceaseless extension of the frontiers of innovation are now dead. Originality is dead. The avant-garde artistic tradition is dead. All religions and utopian visions are dead and resistance to the status quo is impossible because revolution too is now dead. Like it or not, we humans are stuck in a permanent crisis of meaning, a dark room from which we can never escape

what university has the best comparative literature program for contemporary Continental philosophy, especially Derrida?

I'm currently a freshman undergrad at a crappy commuter college, and I'm transferring to the University of Colorado next year to major in the humanities, which is an interdisciplinary major they offer that allows two concentrations. I am planning on doing philosophy and English literature, and I have some questions concerning what follows after my BA.

I desire a good graduate education culminating in a PhD, and my ultimate goal is to teach at the university level.

My area of interest is Continental philosophy and Postmodernism, and Literary Theory as a result as well. I've studied, and I would like to study in more depth philosophers like Kant, Hegel, Marx, Freud, Nietzsche, Husserl, Foucault, and Derrida, to name a few. To name a few schools of philosophy, I have in mind German Idealism, Phenomenology, Existentialism, Marxism, Structuralism, and Poststructuralism.

What should I study? Philosophy or Literature?

Where should I study? One of the rarer American universities that have a strong Continental faculty, or a university with a humanities department that emphasizes Continental thought?

As far as preference goes, I would like to live in New York City, but that probably cuts it down quite a bit.

Any advice anybody?
