This divide is ultimately based on egoism.

People who like high brow lit do so to stroke their own egos

People who like low brow lit do so to distance themselves from the high brow lit people but in doing that their taste is still just as superficial as the taste of those who like high brow lit.

Then there's people who go some other way like saying the dichotomy doesn't exist or that it isn't as clearly defined as one and the other. These people are just contrarians trying to distance themselves from the high and low brow people.
