Very depressing book.

Is it a common experience to find novels where a character is almost identical to you? A character who makes you realize what's valuable and worthless in yourself, and really makes you conscious of your own being with greatly increased confidence? I'm 1/3 of the way through Notes from the Underground and it couldn't have come at a more critical time in my life.

Is the underground man an archetype of the 4chan NEET? Smart, but not as smart as he thinks he is, extremely insecure, hates everyone but secretly wants their approval, does dumb autistic shit like stalk some guy for 2 years to find the perfect time to bump into him.

just read this (Megashark translation). although it's a good novel and D has a great understanding of the mind i'd say it's basically a pastiche of gogol's diary of a madman, with a little influence from the OVercoat. thoughts?

Did Dostoevsky hold any of the opinions written about in Notes From The Underground? Was he, at one time, like the Underground Man?
