The fact that so many books still name Joyce "the greatest or most significant or most influential"writer ever only tells you how far literature still is from becoming a serious art. Art critics have long recognized that the greatest artists of all times are Da Vinci and Van Gogh, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times.Film critics rank the highly controversial Tarantino over film directors who were highly popular in theaters around Europe. Literary critics are still blinded by commercial success: Joyce's works sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore he must have been the greatest.

How would explain to someone who never read any of his work why James Joyce was so great/important?

ITT: Pick the country with the greatest writers of the 20th Century (in any language) and show a list of authors to back this up.

I posit that Ireland had the best.

James Joyce, Brian O'Nolan (AKA Flann O'Brien) Samuel Beckett, W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Brendan Behan, Brian Friel and John B. Keane.

Wilde was the 19th Century, in case some people wonder as to why I have excluded him and Sean O'Casey doesn't rate against his contemporaries, in my opinion.

So I'm reading A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Seriously I like Joyce as a writer, but does he have to have 100 pages of just Catholic Hell babble? It's not even good. Just some priest going on and on and on. Before this I really liked this book.

Am I missing something important?

>/lit/
>recommendation thread
>people start to debate sides of topic you're requesting about instead of actually recommending books

You know this is why /lit/ sucks, right? Because you argue all the time instead of just throwing out "Hey, I read _____ and liked it and it deals with your request OP." Not "fuck you and your bullshit, your tastes are shitty, i haven't read anything dealing with social constructs or biological determinism but here's my viewpoint anyways dune rules"

Seriously shut the fuck up, if I want a recommendation thread written by jewish writers don't start arguing whether or not Maus actually depicts the holocaust, whether the holocaust existed, hitler vs. stalin

Aren't you tired of this bullshit?

If you're going to enter a recommendation thread and feel the need to shove your epeen literary opinions down everyone's throat in order to get OP to think "oh hey that's what i think i should read what he reads" then, well, OP's not really going to learn anything knew about "the other side" of the goddamn debate and will gain shit all from the books that made you like you are now.

So fuck off.
