instinctively i would say there's an element of spite and edginess, stemming from having been the villain of the western world until recently (and also sorta again, since very recently). i guess there's an assumption that the (western) mainstream (of thought and morality) may be / is wrong, and a tendency to identify with the 'misunderstood' or alternative side.
