What's the worst piece of sci-fi technology which took itself seriously you've ever read?

I might have to go with the farcasters from Hyperion. If you just ignore the word "Planck" it's literally not explained at all. Don't get me wrong I love Hyperion but a bit of backstory or history beyond "here it is, love AI" instead of just pseudo science. I know it's science fantasy but it still bugged me.
