Most people do not fully grasp the extent to which NGE is influenced by German idealism and romanticism. Don't believe Anno when he says he puts everything into the show "just because it's cool." Some things are in the show because Anno thought they were cool, but not EVERYTHING is. In particular, Eva is heavily influenced by Hegel and Freud.
