>While crossing the Continent the boys had expressed wonder at how much more infected with light the night-time terrains passing below them had become—more than anyone could ever remember, as isolated lanterns and skeins of gas-light had given way to electric street-lighting, as if advanced parties of the working-day were progressively invading and settling the unarmed hinterlands of night. But now at last, flying in over southern California and regarding the incandescence which flooded forth from suburban homes and city plazas, athletic fields, movie theatres, rail yards and depots, factory skylights, aerial beacons, streets and boulevards bearing lines of automobile headlights in constant crawl beyond any horizon, they felt themselves in uneasy witness to some final conquest, a triumph over night whose motive none could quite grasp.

A friend mentioned this literature forum were big Pynchon fans. Is this true?

Lets talk about his works then. My favourite is Gravity's Rainbow. His mastery of language is amazing. It's like Shakespeare on Cannabis.

Looking for some discussion, /lit/

Why do the anons of the board keep pushing memes and denigrating those who don't take a lofty academic approach to literature? Isn't art supposed to be subjective? Nothing really matters; if a writer presents some aesthetically impressive work, why not enjoy it?

So, I've previously avoided Pynchon, largely because I think I've been afraid of him - for lack of better words. Lately, I've been thinking about finally giving him a go.

Before I start into a new author, I read excerpts of famous passages and any famous existing analysis of its themes and meanings and I research the author's background and try to learn as much about the author as I'm able. As I've begun to learn more about Pynchon and read various theories of his work, I'm getting more and more excited to dive into his canon. If I'm being honest, I've only really understood him as a meme from coming here (and maybe that will stay true?) and I'd like to finally give him an honest chance and see if I like his stuff.

Anyone read Pynchon willing to share what it is about his work, in particular, that makes him your favorite author or one of your favorites? There are Pynchon memes all over this place but it seems to be pretty rare that he's discussed with any seriousness.

I'd also be interested in hearing from those who don't take his work seriously after having read him, and why?

Reminder that you are living in a Pynchon world. Enjoy it while it lasts because literature dies with him.

Can you help me understand Pynchon, /lit/?

I fully expect to be called a pleb and maybe that's valid. I'm hoping someone will decide to not call me a pleb and help me out.

I admit, I haven't read his stuff extensively. Part of that has to do with every time I start to get into it, I kind of just think, "hmm...maybe it's just not my thing." Then I often pick up something else and abandon him again. I know he's challenging, but I've found other writers challenging, too, and I've been able to fight through it because there is definitely something that makes me want to continue. With him, I just sort of abandon him until I do the same thing again, maybe a year later.

I also ask because he's constantly brought up in discussions of greatest living writers, while I hardly ever see his prose quoted or certain passages linked or scenes as examples of his greatness. I mean, there are many famous writers I haven't gone into extensively, but I know some of their more famous scenes, passages, or examples of their prose. With Pynchon, I don't really know any.

Can anyone help out? Maybe offer some examples of his prose or point me to particular scenes or passages to better understand his supposed greatness? Maybe there are great websites or videos out there or books with solid analysis or discussion of his work you can link me?

This really isn't a meme thread or a bait post. I'm making a genuine effort to understand better.

He's 77 years old /lit/. Do you think he has another book in him? or that it might be posthumous?
