The thing with most modern fantasy like Bakker is it's just not very good. I don't understand how the genre consistently churns out such generic and uninspired shit. And I say this as a huge fantasy fan and have been since a child.

There seems to be a trend to try and break away from the
>elves, dwarves, dragons
tropes but the issue is that most of these authors aren't very good at creating alternatives so you end up with not-elves and not-dwarves.
Then there's the nomenclature and naming. It seems half the characters, factions and foils are in there purely because the author thought "umbral covenant sounds cool, let's make a faction up to use that name". A book is meant to tell a story, not just showcase hecking cool bad guys and sorcerers.
On the flip side you have idiots like Jordan who's making antagonist in WoT is literally called "the Dark One".

It seems a lot of fantasy authors are entitled and feel their work should automatically get praise just because they spent years working on it. And even after years of such work, the result is usually bland and unoriginal. Fantasy fiction needs to be recognised as a rarity, not everyone can do it and not everyone should

I hate "soft" and "smooth" magic systems, I only like "hard" and "hunky" magic systems
