imagine genuinely believing that everything is going to be alright
fukuyama's 'end of history' wasn't just some staggeringly naive meme-take on Hegel; people genuinely felt (and with some justification) that this was it: we had solved the problems of politics, society, and economy; all that was required was the gradual development of the global economy, with more infrastructure, more education, and more connections -- ultimately, the borders and walls would come down, global government would emerge, the nation-state would give way to international cooperation; war would be a thing of the past, and we would move forward, out of the darkness of religion and superstition, away from the barbarism of the past, towards a rational, scientific future, in which free markets, human rights, the rule of law, and representative democracy are enjoyed by all, in which all equality of opportunity extends across the globe, and poverty is abolished.

imagine that this imagined future, this dream, is rudely interrupted with fire and molten steel, with an explosive, percussive interlude, as the weight of history, the rude and ungoverned passions of the past, come bursting through the seams of the global order; when the ancient fears and primal drives, thought banished to books and played out in celluloid fantasies, are instead given harsh and fantastic form, when the images of film, of destruction and annihilation, are made hideously, inexorably real.

There have been a few threads recently complaining about the state of this board. While I don't agree with everything that's said, the basic problem seems to me that you have to sift through mountains of adolescent trash to find that elusive quality content: helpful recommendations, interesting discussions, insightful observations, etc.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good forum where these kinds of things can still be found, but without sacrificing the freedom of expression (and freedom from sanctimonious moralising) that so often dominates other spaces.
