It's 50+ books written by an assortment of bad to mediocre writers with only Dan Abnett standing out. Really not worth the time or effort.
As far as fluff goes, Wh40k is right there with any other big franchise like Star Wars, Gaylo or what have you. You have to be a fan to stomach most of the output. I am not that much of a fan.
