I've read the entire cannon several times. Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes for the screen, that's all there is to it. The last movie with RDJ was a joke. A steampunk, fightclub, Michael Bay-esque joke. I'll admit I was entertained and even surprised at points; but yeah, no. The Zero Effect starring Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller (playing it extremely straight, thankfully) was the greatest modern adaptation--particularly because it was never billed as such. I am hugely skeptical of this new BBC adaptation, especially with what the OP said.
