here's what I did
1. found something I was passionate about
2. find charity that helps others with that thing i.e. education, healthcare, etc.
3. volunteered some time

Also, you don't need to devote tons of time. even one day every two weeks helps. just find someone who needs help, and help them (for a cause you're interested in). because at the end of the day, you'll feel better about yourself, and they'll feel better about themselves as well.
