>>Abu Mus'ab al-Suri is the antithesis of the fanatical, pre-programmed suicide terrorist stereotype. He has been described as a 'born-critic' anmd had a penchant for satire and ridicule with which eh entertained his readers. A hot-tempered and fiercely independent figure, he never shifted from criticizing jihadi leaders whose politices he felt were erroneous. al-Suri rebuked bin Laden's appetite for international media attention and denounced Abu Qutadah al-Filastini, the foremost jihadi cleric in London, for justifying internecine violence in Algeria and for his doctrinaire understanding of Islam [...] [H]e differed from other jihadi ideologues by always insisting that the use of violence should be based on a thorough, rational long-term strategy [...] His modus operandi was to reassess earlier terrorist campaigns and insurgencies in order to learn from the movement's mistaktes [...] During his twenty-five year career as a global jihadi militant, al-Suri has used his training as an historian to collect, record, summarize and analyze his jihadi experiences. In doing so, he discarded traditional jihadi rhetoric about God's promised victory in favor of brutal honesty, putting hard-nosed realism before religious wish-fulfillment and pragmatic long-term strategies before utopianism. By subjecting the objects of his study to secular academic scrutiny and by integrating Western literature on guerilla warfare, international security and power politics, al-Suri evolved fascinating doctrines about decentralized jihadi warfare in the post-9/11 security environment.
