Ligotti's more forward-pushing work, where he uses horror to illustrate not only the horrible condition the universe places on humanity, but also the horrible condition man places on other men (capitalist horror for example) is unique and really unmatched by any contemporary horror author in its oppresivness. While he often gets too indulgent, his overall output is of FAR higher standard than either Poe or Lovecraft. Ligotti doesn't have the shitty comic stories of Poe, the predictability of Lovecraft or the dry scientific contemplation of either. Most of Ligotti's fiction is pretty darn consistent. This does not matter of course when talking about influence, but I rec Ligotti.

How influential it has been and will continue to be only time will tell. Many seem to be more drawn to his philosophical writings than his fiction which is a real shame because in terms of quality his fiction is leagues better. I personally do not see Ligotti's artistic stamp on much, at least in terms of commercial media.
