The greatest artists all seem to suffer from some form of insanity which is what makes their work so unique.

Were people like Kafka, Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare and to a lesser extent Hunter S Thompson merely insane? Or do they percieve a far higher plain of reality to that which the common man is capable of experiencing?

Camus is so hot. I also have a bit of a crush on Kafka. He's cute. I want to just hug him and tell him everything will be okay.

Lately I've been trying to write music. Tell me what you guys think about this
-
I walk on the sandy shore,
I've got no one to share my joy.
The sun came up out of the deep blue sea,
it was very bright, I couldn't see.
Why does it matter if I'm alone?
Why does it matter if I can't see?
All that matters is I'm at the beach.

Where do I start with this lad? I constantly hear good things about him, and a lot of stuff I like has referenced him or been allegedly influenced by him.

Just finished the Trial.
It was dry and boring. The Metamorphosis was the perfect length, and felt far more oppressive. The Trial was bad. Why is it regarded as a classic, /lit/?

>(His lover, Dora Diamant, also ignored his wishes, secretly keeping up to 20 notebooks and 35 letters until they were confiscated by the Gestapo in 1933. An ongoing international search is being conducted for these missing Kafka papers.)

>That feel when those papers will never be discovered, or if they are discovered will be thrown away by a pleb that doesn't know any better.

"My peers, lately, have found companionship through means of intoxication - it makes them sociable. I, however, cannot force myself to use drugs to cheat on my loneliness - it is all that I have - and when the drugs and alcohol dissipate, will be all that my peers have as well." -- Franz Kafka

By the way, wasn't Nietzsche a teeotaler? If so, I would imagine it was for similar reasons.

Hello all,

I was thinking about reading Kafka for the first time and decided to flip through a few pages of the metamorphosis... The plot seems really interesting in a surrealist sort of way, but after almost finishing Naked Lunch I just feel like the prose is a bit stale and I have trouble keeping interest. Anyone else think Kafka is worth reading... or on the same note, find Naked Lunch to be as exceptional as I did?

Kafka never made a living off his works either, still produced great classics. He had unfinished works, but also many others that were complete. Even writers who made money from their literature has uncompleted works, so don't try to argue against my point through that context.

>I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we are reading doesn't wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? ...we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us.
-Franz Kafka

So lit, why don't you do this?
