There's something incredibly satisfying about picking up a book where no sentence is wasted, it starts somewhere and by the end of it the pattern is complete and everything is resolved. That you can read in a couple afternoons after work/school and then put in your bookshelf, feeling sated.

I have entire shelves of these wonderful pocketbooks that actually fit inside your pocket and within their pages contain complete structures and stories. Science fiction anthologies and standalone fantasy works, smaller anthologies. Even works that were first published in this neat manner are now slapped together into big tomes. Every time I pick up a new fantasy brick and it says it is the first part on the front I know what drudgery to expect and I'm never proven wrong.

I'm writing my undergraduate thesis on the Book of the New Sun. This news bums me out more than I thought it would. Gene Wolfe is one of my favorite writers of all time. Rest in peace
