I don't really know what other term we could use to describe the "third world." The phrase "developing country" has always seemed condescending and also inaccurate to me. There are "developing" countries like Haiti or Afghanistan that either aren't developing at all or are getting worse. Referring to Haiti as a "developing country" implies that it will develop at some point, which, let's be honest, is wildly optimistic.
