Spent a good portion of yesterday struggling over a page in one of Aristotle's books and after reading the page again for the tenth time, what he was trying to say finally hit me and I understood everything and it felt so good. Probably the most sublime experience I've ever had while reading philosophy. Is this what it's always like?

Scrolling is information absorption by proxy. The purpose of scrolling is to view more information, since if all of the information were already on the screen the need to scroll would not exist.

To excel in the science of "Scrolling" one must tread the middle way. A moderate speed, neither so swift one cannot see the threads, and not so slow and plodding that valuable reading time is wasted.

The mind is like a cup, and information is like wine. If too much wine is poured too quickly it will spill over and not be retained. I have calculated various speeds that information flows into the mind mathematically based upon the flow of wine into a cup (See: On the Flow of Liquids and Aqueous Elements). Some minds; like your own Socrates; are large enough to hold much wine at a time, others are not so. Thus, each should choose a scrolling speed that allows them to absorb the optimum flow of information.

Let us extend this to the book. What is the optimum speed of reading? If you desire to *read* the book or study then the optimum speed is that which allows the greatest comprehension. My old friend Harilaos can read 1000 pages an hour while retaining 80<x<100 (percent) of the information. If an ordinary man were to attempt this he would no doubt even fail to retain 10%. However, If this man were to read 10 pages an hour and retain >90% of the information, he would have improved his reading skill.

Sophistry will be the death of you Socrates!

Is there ANY point to reading Aristotle? All of his stuff is so outdated and just significantly out of line with our current understanding of the world.

I was going to read his work on logic, since I thought that's the one area he could have some relevance still yet nope, apparently his logical works are completely outdated as well and will give you a poor understanding of logic.

Is this guy's philosophy only interesting as a historical curiousity and nothing more?

I can't imagine a more conceited prick than Aristotle, honestly thinking he has 'solved' philosophy's biggest problems and therefore could turn his back on Plato's Academy.
