Why should i read a book about smelling flowers and being sissy asthmatic faggot?

Is it worth it to read In Search of Lost Time even if it's going to be in a translation? I've heard a lot of good things about Proust's prose and wanted to try it out, but I'm afraid that some of the "mastery" will be lost in translation. This definitely happened a little bit to me with certain authors like Kafka and Dostoevsky. If yes, which translation is best?

Does anyone else have those moments while reading In Search of Lost Time when you turn back to a piece of description from fifty pages ago to check some character's name or something, and you feel like you've never read this paragraph or (since it's Proust) sentence before. Is it because of the density of imagery that this happens?

Out of all the famous and supposedly greatest books of all time this is the one I see least discussed on here. I thought maybe nobody has read it because of its length but then again people are willing to read IJ so I don't quite get why it's so absent in a forum which tends to give most attention to the 'greats'.

So, has anyone actually read it and is it as incredible as it's made out to be?
