In the suburbs, one opens books filled with great struggles and great deeds and knows in advance where they all end, in the quiet monotony of a life without change and without hope. History ends in a high school room where young people are taught to hate the only possible path to freedom, learning and striving. History ends with a mass culture where people make millions of dollars for publishing songs about drinking alcohol. History ends with the expert’s laugh; the psychiatrist, the psychologist, the therapist, the priests of technocracy.
