Any book recommendations on mortification of the flesh and specifically self-flagellation. Especially a guide on how and why to do it?

I would like to read a book on the history of philosophy, but I don't know which one is better. My options are:

- A New History of Western Philosophy, by Anthony Kenny
- Frederick Copleston's A History of Philosophy

Those of you who have read them, which one do you prefer? Why?

There is nothing good about this life. It has been seen since Adam to Job and Jonah.

God is a nothing. All ideas, philosophy are a nothing save one's own sublimation.

I loathe my life, says Job, prior to his reckoning. And what for? To come back to where he had started. To arrive before death.

Everything past childhood is wading through shit.

What are some books for this feel? By saying this, I've been but all of you and lack any individual sense. Thanks, hyperreality.

If holiness means chastity and all believers should aspire to holiness, does this mean that Christianity is antinatalist?

It's a Jewish/Protestant/Muslim meme that there can be such a thing as a truly non-degenerate and fulfilling and virtuous householder existence. They're basically secularism in disguise.

Never trust a religion that doesn't have monastic, heremetic and ascetic traditions.

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

I don't think they have to be mutually exclusive. You can have very high standards and approve of nothing below it but still realise that most people can't help but fuck themselves over and therefore feel empathy for their not being able to reach those standards.

I try to reserve most of my contempt for myself and don't focus to much on other people's weaknesses. It's not easy but consciously attempting this helps.

My own moderate asceticism is mostly one of negative hedonism. In an attempt to diminish my suffering I've sought to diminish my life, in the sense that I make it smaller, simpler and more peaceful.

So far it's working out very well for me, I don't think I have felt this good since childhood. I've done away with most of the vices I've aquired since puberty.
