This image is a satirical joke, but it actually does highlight some of the nuanced differences between Mahayana and Theravada. Most Westerners (like me) are always going to prefer Mahayana because it can be flexible and fluid. Mahayana will experiment with different sutras and tantras, so it's about finding a community you vibe with, rather than arduously studying the Pali Canon. Mahayana (which means 'Greater Vehicle') would insult Theravadans by calling them Hihayana ('Lesser Vehicle'). I don't think anyone does that anymore, but it's part of the hitory. Mahayana Buddhists tend to think that Theravadans are too dogmatic and strict. They may maintain an older tradition, but if you engage in actions for purely traditional reasons, are you actually developing awareness, or are you clinging to culture?

Is it feasible to read the entire Pali canon?
