I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding or visualizing how characters and places in books may look, i usually have to read the descriptions many times and slowly build a puzzle in my head about it. Is this normal or intentional from the writers? Or am i just missing something / low brain power. Thanks in advance

Bonus points if someone can tell me if reading speed generally improves with experience. :)
