This and it's really because he only did it all to satisfy his own autism. He enjoyed inventing languages as a child and never gave up the hobby- the original legends were written as stories for his languages to have a home in. Even the Hobbit was written to entertain his own children and for the pleasure of exploring themes from the heroic sagas he loved so much and knew so well as a scholar. This manuscript remained unpublished for years before it was found almost serendipitously by someone with a connection to the publishing industry. The public of course lapped it up and demanded a sequel- so when Tolkien sits down to start writing this he already has over two decades worth of background and lore to couch the whole narrative in. This is why the Lord of the Rings feels like an actual historical account of events that really took place. It is totally unique in this regard and will never be surpassed, the whole thing was lightning in a bottle. As far as I'm concerned the entire genre of modern fantasy began and ended with this one writer.
