Endymion (AKA Gundam Unicorn)
Starring Aenea as Mineva Zabi, Raul Endymion as Banagher Links, the Farcaster Portals as La Place's box (The Story: The McGuffin: The Filler Tier Experience) and The Church as Neo Zeon and a whole host of the old characters that you actually care about as side characters for a bad retconning fanfic tier rendition of the book that you actually cared about.

The only returning major character has been retconned into a soulless one dimensional villain.

Endymion is really similar to IBO and indeed the Gundam franchise for all the wrong reasons especially because the female protagonist is the spitting image of Mineva/Kudelia and suddenly everyone becomes a newtype. I believe Mars features roughly once. A couple of times?

Hyperion (the two books before Endymion) is less space opera but fantastic and worth the read.

All the books have much more religion in them than Gundam.

Endymion book 1 is basically Gundam Unicorn just substitute LaPlace's box for the Farcasting portals and add water but Raul is a little less competent than Banagher and the Pax troops are like Gjallarhorn tier effective

Endymion book 2 UNDERSTANDING with a more empowered NotMineva (and it's way more EMPOWERED than Kudelia Eina Bernstein you'll understand this if you read this because of her 'method of transport') bringing Newtype enlightenment to the rest of humanity.

Just like UC Gundam, the characterisations of Endymion are comparable to Unicorn. We've got Char → Full Frontal and Hoyt → more one dimensional character and it's basically a fanservice come retcon with a whole bunch of old characters as a nod to the previous and more interesting work complete with timetravel bullshit. No real mechs though, but you'll probably enjoy the ships, keeping that they're nowhere near as /comfy/ as White Base. (But there is a talking ship like in Douglas Adam's Hitchiker's and his unpublished Doctor Who script Shada.)

The original Hyperion is very good but it's not really /m/ apart from the Shrike with wonderful prose and fantastic stories. Also, both Hyperion and Endymion are very focussed on the religious aspects, unlike Gundam.
