Also I think you are getting the wrong read of the novel. It's not supposed to be about race, religion or politics, the forefront of the novel is loneliness and isolation so anything significant can always be tied back to it whether it be by cause or effect. In the case of Blount and Communism, his inability to express himself emotionally in a level headed way and also his failure to understand compromise with Copeland prevent any progress toward furthering his political cause. Furthermore Copeland's inability to sympathise with the uneducated members of the black community prevent any proper coordination to organise any political opposition.
