Think of negative feedback and criticism is a gift in the beginning. It's better you find out what is working and what isn't when you're starting out as a writer rather than everyone telling you you're great, then publishing a book and getting chewed up by professional book critics.

Your friends and family are going to tell you you're great, so don't even think of counting on them for an honest opinion. Be brave and know that criticism will help you write, rather than crushing under your ego.

I do a lot of practice writing short stuff and posting it online because I know people will give me honest reviews. I find out what my strengths and weaknesses are, such as dialogue versus plot or description, and then when I work on my 'big story' I have all of this feedback to guide me.
