I think it's partly because the people who post so negatively on here are only doing so because there is the relative safety of anonymity on the internet, and if it were a real social situation, they would be far more accommodating of other people's opinions. If they did express such intolerance and bigotry, they would simply be ousted by more normal people. It is harder to oust such people on an internet forum, however.

I've only recently started frequenting /lit/, but I've quickly become aware that only a fragment of what is posted on here is even intended to be genial, constructive, discursive, or in any way helpful. The rest is just butthurt, internet rage, trolling, or unrelated shite.

Having said that, there are a few good things to be said for this forum. It's amusing sometimes, and I've become more aware of a wider array of literature, and there are occasionally some obviously quite intelligent people who do actually contribute some really interesting things.
