There are several different frames of reference you can acquire in literary studies. There's critical theory, there's world literature, there's the various national literatures, there's the major movements like modernism, naturalism, etc, there's the major mediums like drama, poetry, the novel. Not understanding one of these frames is not evidence you don't understand literature.

It's actually impossible to acquire more than a passing familiarity with more than a few of them because of the amount of time it takes. You probably HAVE been wasting your time if you haven't been putting in a few hours a day. Even a half hour and by now you'd have accumulated a huge amount of knowledge organized along the lines of personal preferences. It's also likely a lot of your college education sloughed off. It's pretty easy to re-aquire a basic familiarity with stuff like greek myth, the western philosophical basics, etc. Just read a few introductions. The thing you're really missing out on is the depth you only rarely find here.

A lot of what you see on this board is basically the contemporary literary scene/philosophy scene rather than any kind of actual education. It comes out of magazines, websites, whatever. The rest is contemporary undergraduate studies compounded into it.

"Friday evening I was invited to a party at a colleague from work's house. There were thirty-odd of us, all middle-management aged between twenty five and forty. At a certain moment some stupid bitch started removing her clothes. She took off her t-shirt, her bra, and then her skirt, and as she did she pulled the most incredible faces. She twirled around in her skimpy panties for a few seconds more, and then, not knowing what else to do, got dressed again. She's a girl, what's more, that doesn't sleep with anyone. Which only underlines the absurdity of her behavior.'

I am more disgusted by midcult but I have to say lowbrow. The 'midcult' stuff is stuff that should all be lowbrow, but because lowbrow things, and the conditions that make them attractive, exist, midcult can be seen from their vantage as highbrow.

Lowbrow stuff also has no connection to the highbrow. Midcult consumption can prepare you for high culture because it has mixed good in it. Over time, with maturity and sincere ambition, midcult heads to high culture. Masscult just leads to more masscult. The climax of masscult is a binge of masscult.
