Substance abuse is as old as human self awareness, as it presents one of the few ways to deal with the sorrow of existence. No way it would pose any less of a "problem" if it wasn't for internet communities forming around it. And in a way I actually have more respect for the substance abusers than for functioning wageslaves. What the fuck is wrong with someone who can go through an average workday without at least wishing for being zoinked out?

Legend of Galactic Heroes. A Japanese epic series about a war between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance of Free Worlds, primarily told from the point of view of the leading military strategist of each side. Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen Li, respectively.

Almost all the characters are dudes, and it gets pretty deep into the problems that the various governmental structures have, including democracy.
