Does anyone else have problem picking up on metaphors and connecting themes between chapters and scenes in stories they read?

I am reading Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment," I'm only about six chapters in but I'm very confused and feeling self-conscious. I read a chapter where Raskolnikov had a dream and I can't figure out what the the fuck the dream is meant to symbolize, or if it's a metaphor at all or what. It occurs to me as a result that a lot of the things I read seem to have metaphors that are blatant to some but slip right by me.

Am I pic related? Is this normal? How the fuck do I become more perceptive and draw more connections while reading?
