I don't think that he's a very skilled writer, but I've enjoyed the books of his that I've read. They definitely conjured up a wanderlust that been laying dormant inside of me.

The design this month looks great. I have mixed feelings about the commentary section. I like the poetry commentary, but probably just because I like what they said about my poem. Not so sure I like the commentary on the fiction.

1. I'm not the target demographic for young adult fantasy.

2. It's popularity among idiots makes it extremely unappealing.

3. I actually read part of the first book and thought it was an uninteresting and too similar to another book I read in my youth ("The Wizard's Hall" by Jane Yolen).

I don't put any faith in seminars. It might give you some new perspectives, but it isn't going to do much for you as far as accreditation goes. You're going to need some kind of degree to break into what's left of the journalism industry. Unless you've got extra money to burn I'd steer clear.

You might as well start at the beginning. Since there are only fragments of the pre-Socratics left behind I'd suggest Plato. His dialogues are simple and fun. After that Aristotle.

I thought that the story about the motorcycle trip was enjoyable, but Persig's concept of the classical vs romantic was some bullshit. That was my feeling when I read it around four years ago before I had really delved into any philosophy. I'm not even sure that I finished it. Fuck, now I'm going to have to read it all over again.

Stage 1: Religion
Stage 2: Philosophy
Stage 3: Science

Sadly some people are still stuck in stage one.

Kafka's Metamorphosis was a good read. I was planning on reading The Trial, but it wasn't even finished. Neither was The Castle or Amerika, yet they were all still published posthumously. Why should I read them if they weren't even finished? Not only do they lack entire sections of plot and story, but he didn't get a chance to refine or edit them down to a finalized work.

Those are my feelings as well. I didn't even start reading with an inflated expectation of genius. The writing isn't bad, it's just boring. That goes for the settings are well as his prose. Overall I felt like I just wasted my time. Funny thing was immediately after I finished the last Hemingway book I read I read a John Fante novel which blew that Hemingway shit out of the water. Go figure.

Have you ever read a book in a single day?

Post Office. Reading it made me want to become a boozing post office working poet womanizer despite knowing better.

Why? Do you limit yourself to strictly classical pieces, prog rock, jazz, fusion, etc? I try to maintain an appreciation for a wide variety of genres. Also I found the shirt at a thrift store.

Typically, I prefer an ereader over a printed book. With an ereader I can easily hold it and turn the pages using only one hand. I usually read several books in tandem, so with the ereader it's very convenient to switch back and forth. The only benefit I get from physical books is the ability to use a highlighter on them for note taking.
