Definetly LSD. It was discovered by the most unlikely accident and has always had an elusive pie-in-sky, gold at the end or the rainbow feel to it. Experimenting with LSD caused people to make some of the most influential and game-changing discoveries and innovations from the structure of DNA to computer engineering and music.

LSD was at the central of the hippy movement of the 60's which in turn gave birth to the anti-war movement and similar movements as welll as the beginning of massive interest by western peoples into things typically not common in the west like alternative lifestyles, eastern religions and philosophy, meditation, yoga, mindfullness etc. Regardless of whether you dig or hate these things they are pervasive in the western world largely because of LSD.

The James Fadiman experiments that showed amazing increases in creativity and problem-solving with LSD would alone be enough to grant it the prize but combined with everything else its the obvious choice. The fact that a tiny microscopic amount of an odorless and tasteless chemical can have so much influence on world history, culture and the individual is pretty amazing desu.

For most people that arn't emotionless robots who take a decent amount of actual LSD in a good setting find that its one of the most significant expetiences of thier entire lives. A good strong LSD trip is incredibly sublime.
