MD isn't exactly hard in terms of situational comprehension, but the language is archaic/bombastic and Melville packs so much in that it can feel like you are missing a lot. Also chapter after chapter of cetology made me put it down for a month my first read. It's a good check at the door for readers who rely too heavily on plots, because it barely threads one together and yet it's still amazing

I was reading some random reference work(?, I don't know what to call it) about a French literature or something, and the author references a lot of stuff that I never heard about. I suppose the writer assume that I should know this before reading it, but fuck, there's so much and so complex.. where do I start? I can't sit through books/essays like these because they keep referencing other stuff that I don't know? Where do I start bros? what's the beginning?
