There has been a lot of talk about philosophy around lately and it's got me thinking I'd like to start reading it. My question is, what are some good platforms for me to begin my exploration of philosophy from? Basically, what are some entry-level books on philosophy for me to get started with?

What does /lit/ think of critical thinking as an everyday philosophy?

Anyone want to have a philosophical discussion? I like philosophy, though I am a layman and amateur.

II just had the thought that perhaps life doesn't hold an answer. We search for one very hard, but maybe death is the only answer? The abyss might give us the truth we were searching for so much.

Anyway, if anyone wants to discuss anything bring up a topic

Hey /lit/. I want to get into philosophy, where do I start? What are the classics that I have to read before I am home free?

Is utalitarianism the answer to a great deal of the world's problems?

It makes so much sense to me, but on account of it being practically unheard of (for the majority of people) I can't help but wonder if there's some massive underlying flaw I just haven't picked up on

>Taking AP English 3
>Teacher says it will be hard and that's it hard for him to teach the course itself
>Nervous

Should I get out now and retain a good grade or should I tough it out and pull-out if it gets to hard for me to handle like I was planning to do?

Apparently tons of people have said the teacher himself is a hard teacher and the teacher openly admits to his class getting smaller as the year drags on and that the year after this one will actually be easier in terms of AP english.
Honestly I would ace regular english 3 no problem.
What should I do /lit/?

Has anyone else ever taken AP English 3?

How difficult is it? I haven't done much reading since middle school and English has always been easy for me but than again it's easy for everyone.

For those of you who don't know AP stands for Advanced Placement.

I failed the 2nd grade twice so I'm 2 years older than everyone else.

Also, will I end up taking the same exact course only for actual money if I go to college when I hit 18?

Wondering where to start with a well rounded philosophical education? I have some Thoreau, I picked up Agrippa's works, and have nowhere really to go from there. So can you help me out? I'm not looking for the usual "pleb" bullshit, just some honest recommendations for books and which specific edition/translation (since quite a bit of philosophy was not originally english) to start with.

Taking an Introduction to Philosophy this year in Brown. What are some books I should read to help prepare myself for this class? I am very excited to be taking it, on a side note.

The recommended reading for the wiki really needs to get sorted out
Someone just coming to /lit/ doesn't want to look at books by type or origin. They just want for us to tell them the first 20 books or so they should read.
Discuss

So I'm going to start reading Plato's Socratic dialogues.
Where should I start? And anything I should know before jumping in? Anything I should read prior?
Not sure how heavily he discusses Greek mythology but I've read enough of Homer, Hesiod, Sophocles, etc to feel comfortable with it.
Thanks in advance.

How does one into philosophy?

I want to be able to prepare myself for Kierkegaard, Nietzsche Dostoevsky, etc so I can fully grasp what they're saying, but I have never read anything remotely philosophical (I'm pretty new to books in general, really). Where do I start?

Thanks

Hey /lit/
How can someone who only reads fiction start getting into philoshopy?

I mean, what are those "must read" books, those "must know" authors and those "must know first than everything"?

Psychological egoism is the view that humans are always motivated by self-interest, even in what seem to be acts of altruism. It claims that, when people choose to help others, they do so ultimately because of the personal benefits that they themselves expect to obtain, directly or indirectly, from doing so. This is a descriptive rather than normative view, since it only makes claims about how things are, not how they ought to be. It is, however, related to several other normative forms of egoism, such as ethical egoism and rational egoism.

Does anyone believe this? Are all human behaviors generally motivated by self-interest/selfish means?

Hello /lit/, first time I come here, I need your help. For my Logic class I need to write an essay (at least 3 A4 pages long) about Aristotle, Plato, Socrates or any other Greek philosopher.

Can you guys show me some ONLINE books that contain information about these people? If you can't find online books then recommend me some titles anyway, I don't mind, at least 3.

I prefer online because I need it fast.

Thank you in advance.

Am I the only one who thinks that Philosophy should have its on place on 4chan?

It's not that bad to come to /lit/ and find some posts about Philosophy, if they are really worth it. But lately is just more and more posts of it. Most threats deal with philosophical theories or thinkers and most book debates or reviews are oriented or concerned only with Philosophy or with philosophical views.

It is not that I dont like it. The problem is that instead of being something else among many things which enrich /lit/ it seems that it's becoming the main or the only thing around. I don't know if this is a problem of /lit/ that is giving up the other ways of doing literature of it is that those who like philosophy are overcoming and taking /lit/ to talk about their books and the rest just come and look instead of making their stuff too.

Philosophy would do better nowadays to focus on the how rather than the what.

I don't really know where to post this, since there isn't exactly a /philosophy/ board but /lit/ seemed the most appropriate because you guys are my favorite.

Any who, I want to discuss capital punishment. Now this subject has been beaten to death so I wanted to try a new spin on it by taking it from a purely philosophical view. You should not consider the economic, practical, or constitutional aspects but more the abstract philosophy of the question.

Feel fry to take a position on capital punishment, but try and back up your argument with some legitimacy.

hey /lit/. Who is your favorite philosopher and why? Also, recommend me some philosophical reading. I'm pretty untainted on that subject.
