FWIW, I do think more high school tier writers than you mention are good (Fitzgerald, Twain, etc), though of course many are also shit (essentially, Prose's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read" was and is accurate). And of course there are (few) exceptions to the other rules you provide (O'Brian, for instance, writes genre fiction that verges on being respectable).

But that's just me picking nits. Your post is valuable; thank you for it.
