Formal logic is pure math. You won't need any of this in philosophy. In fact, knowing formal logic will ruin philosophy for you. Philosophy is the opposite of logic. Logic is rigorous and produces provable truth. Philosophy is subjective. Trying to put philosophy on a logical basis only leads to cringeworthy infantile language games doomed to fail right from the start.

Challenge a mathematician - he will respond with a proof. Challenge a scientist - he will respond with facts. Challenge a philosopher - he will respond with an infantile insult. This is the pinnacle of a 3000 year intellectual tradition. Embarrassing.

1. Avoiding pain is not a moral "ought". You don't pull your hand away from the not stove due to philosophical daydreams, you pull it away because that's a heckin instinct, preprogrammed by your genes. An animal, a human NPC or a sufficiently trained robot would do the same, and we can all agree that those are incapable of morality.
2. There does exist a universal ought. You ought to accept logical arguments. Nothing about logic itself implies that you cannot reject it. Yet rejecting logic is immoral in an a priori sense.

Yeah, you're not obligated to be the same person as you were five minutes ago, but you have the inertia of habit, your preexisting neural architecture, your memories, and the social pressure to retain a consistent character, all of which amount to something much more forceful than an obligation.
I get that Watts was popular specifically because he offered these vague platitudes to boomers, but this quote is retarded and everybody who's been alive more than five minutes knows it.

My boss is a 25 year old grad student and she lends me books. She's lent me Down the River, Wisdom Sits in Places, the Ecological Indian, and The Last Taxi Driver. I lent her my copy of Gravity's Rainbow and she said it was "confusing".
