Worst thing for was realizing just how many modern supposed fans of SF and fantasy really, REALLY can't get into the classics because they're so accustomed to stories being drama-driven and all about characters they instantly like or hate. That's the kind of audience that doesn't like being fed too much information.

Why do people use the expression "out of character" for fiction? In my experience, most people in real life are inconsistent and unreliable in terms of their emotions and behavior.
