Will reading travel lit make me good at talking with strangers in a different country, getting around places, being more ""adventurous"" and so on? Or is it purely entertainment popcorn?

Latin is the perfect language. Reading it is so satisfying and stimulating that I wish I'd discovered it sooner. Why did we stop teaching it in schools?

It's okay anon, it's not your fault. This is why I think classics should be a hobby. The state of classics education is quite bad, so it seems. I would recommend that you get a hold of LLPSI to get your sight reading skills up to speed. You might even consider going straight into the second volume, if you are comfortable with Caesar. The first volume may be too easy, certainly the first half will be.

I would like to learn about the history and culture of Ancient Rome. Would you kindly recommend books on these subjects? I will read the primary sources, but these books would help me to identify the most relevant sources.
