Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.

Don't be made insecure by that guy's comment. Your favourite poet is the one whose work most affects you and enriches your life. When you read Rilke in translation whats affecting you is still Rilke's imagery, ideas, metaphor, and spirituality and that's what you are encountering and that's impacting you - its just been filtered through a translator into the language that you are best able to understand and is most able to be enjoyed by you. There's no such thing as someone not being "allowed" to choose someone as their favourite poet - its a personal thing that it isn't limited by gatekeeping tactics such as the anti-translation meme.

Although its always worth familiarising yourself with a new language, its never a waste of time.
