Are there any *good* self-help books out there?

I'd like to learn more about time management and lifestyle to improve my own for enjoyment, but most 'self-help' books seem to be for awkward teens who can't get laid or middle age business managers.

A non-contemporary work would be nice.

How come a significant portion of the Western intellectual elite supports an extreme left ideology?

I don't even ask this as someone who is a right winge ( because I'm not ), but it is quite peculiar how intellectuals endorse a fringe ideology with very little followers among the larger population.

The "soulmate" is a conflation of romantic attachment and religious faith.

Unconditional faith in a spiritual dimension that unifies reality; "the one"; the prime mover; the unifying theory of everything = hegelianism; neo-platonism; christianity; "the modernist project" in its most abstract form. This is the religious dimension of social consciousness.

Individuals pursuing the objet petit-a develop romantic attachment to an object that continues to grow in concurrence with the ego.1 Romantic attachment forms out of the intersection of genetic factors, chemical reactions, and the developed gestalt of the individual's life experience, playing out in a chance encounter. A perceived sense of mystery entices the ego as it reflects the unstable nature of the developing gestalt of one's self. The holistic gestalt of the other person, a fantasy constructed out of the intersection of knowledge and mystery, elevate the objet-petit-a into the big Other.

Romantic attachment produces an elevation in value of the objet petit-a, and restructures value prioritization within the ego. Emotionally-driven value structures, being evasive and abtruse, make it difficult to discern difference between highest order values, and the conflation of abstract religious faith and romantic "self-completion" is perceived as a discovery. Deontic actions, grounded by these value structures, produce habits which reflexively affirm the perception.

In other persons, empathic and physical sensory perception (and participation) provide the tools to create this reaction. In the case of waifus, physical sensory perception is usually replaced with imagination (essentially through suspension of disbelieve, the mechanism by which fiction is appreciated). In the latter case, one must expend a great deal more mental energy, and also resist social pressures to pursue real persons, for a waifu relationship to truly form.
