Which writer do you enjoy reading the most? Which writer could write about their morning bowel movement and you'd still enjoy reading about it?

I've been living in the Southwest for a couple months now and the heat is hindering my reading.

What are some good self-help books? Not the new age-y spiritual Oprah shit, is there anything more authentic? I want to read something that will help motivate me towards self-improvement. Could either by fiction or non-fiction.

I know Infinite Jest is one of /lit/s favorite books, but what is /lit/s opinion on its author? To be honest, I found myself starting to hate the man and his work (despite never having read a word of his) simply because of the way he looks in all his photos: like a smug cocky hipster upper-middle-class whiteboy. But then I read his bio and some quotes and now I think better of him. He wasn't arrogant or smug, he was intelligent and deeply troubled.

Also, why is Infinite Jest so great?
