Would be interested to hear opinions about this: do any of you instinctively roll your eyes when you hear someone tell you they do a lot of different kinds of art?

For example, if you met someone and they told you they wrote novels/screenplays/whatever, would your opinion be different if they said they drew and painted and made collages and sculptures and shit like that as well? Part of me instinctively thinks "let me guess, you play guitar, piano and the fucking ocarina too when you're done taking pictures", but I'm sure this is a stupid way to think. There's no reason someone couldn't produce art of value and merit in several disciplines.

what do you think?

Let's talk about chapters. How are chapters best executed, in your opinion? How frequently should new ones appear? Are names for chapters desirable, or can the be spoiling?

Why does everyone think Sherlock Holmes and John Watson were actually fuckbuddies? As far as I remember Watson was actually married.

Alright /lit
Start posting blogs or writing pieces that you've found interesting, well writen or funny as fuck.
Let's discuss what we like about them.

Not your own stuff, please. We're looking for daimonds in the rough that are not ourselves.

Posting this obvious one:

Are there any books that are well-written with the audience of young people (5-18 years of age) in mind, that even an adult can read and think of as enjoyable and not insulting to their(/my) intelligence?

Books I can read to a young child or give to a (pre-)teen to steer them away from trash like Twilight and The Hunger Games essentially.

ITT, we do one of those story circle things.
What, you don't know what those are? Fine.
I tell the first part of a story, then everyone else takes turns continuing it.
Pic related to where I think it will go.
So, anyway:
A long time ago, in the far away land known as Brooklyn, there was a man.
His name was Frank, and he was half octopus.

Does anyone else on here hate textbooks or am I alone on this?

Textbooks are summaries of summaries of summaries of the original books. Textbooks are implying that you are too stupid to understand the original.

As the saying goes, some books are meant to be tasted, some to be swallowed and some to be chewed and digested. A textbook is the result of someone else doing the chewing and digesting for you, so when you read a textbook you are reading shit.

(continued)

We were placed in the care of my mother's parents, as they had just bought a large colonial house in America. Her father, my Grandfather, was an Army Colonel that was about to get his first star for General (this was cancelled when he had his heart attack).
He had been the post's chief Chaplin in Heidelberg and the various other bases in Germany during the 80's and early 90's. My brother was around 8 at the time and I was 5. My Grandparents asked us if we'd like to attend school back in Europe, since our father admitted to not being able to care for us at the time. I said no and attended normal American school (I had already made friends). My brother chose to go to England for a private boarding school. He was gone for about 4 years. During this time, our accents changed and our way of thinking.

We still remained close as brothers, as we were in a small town and were two of only a hand-full of foreigners. I became rather popular in school and my brother remained something of an outcast. He was one of the only people in the entire school to mock Christianity openly (we were in the bible belt) and was always looked at as ''strange''. I worked out and eventually got into drugs. I made a horrible choice then, because everything went down hill from there.

Hey /lit/, I don't normally visit this board very often, but this seemed like the right place for this. I have here the beginning of a story that I started writing, and I was wondering if you could tell me how it is.

In a pastebin because a wall of text doesn't seem right:

But their importance makes them interesting and relevant for me. It's not that I set myself a mission to have read all the books some teacher find important, but I simply enjoy the classics of literature more than the load of crap that's being published at the moment. The problem is sifting through through the crap

Hey /lit/
I recently decided that I want to get into literature. I got a library card and made an amazon.com account, but I'm at something of a standstill.

It's not that I can't think of plenty of books to read. I just have a preference that I would like to read the most ancient works of literature first, and if at all possible, continue reading novels in chronological order. Meaning I'll read the most ancient stuff first and then the most recent stuff much much later. The reason for this is that I like to watch the evolution of style among authors and see how each generation of writers influenced the next. And I don't mind reading religious texts either, I know there are a ton of those in history.

Does anyone know of a listing of major literary works going back to ancient Greece? I have the Iliad and the Odyssey, but I'm still not sure what comes next.

Any help? A history of literary works?

Okay, /lit/. I need your help.

There is a book I want to read, but I don't know what it's called... or even if it really exists. I heard about it in the lyrics of a song and I can't seem to find it. It might not be an actual book, but I think you can see why this would frustrate me.

the story of a ship
who sailed around the world and found
that nothing else exists
beyond his own two sails
and wooden shell
and what is held within

Those are the lyrics. If it's real, I want to read it. It sounds fantastic. Can anyone help me?
