A NOTE TO THE READER

It will quickly become apparent that in this work I have dispensed with the practice, hitherto universal in the field, of proving my results as I proceed. Occasionally, where a particularly appealing demonstration of correctness occurs to me, I may offer it; or where fruitful lines of enquiry regarding such a demonstration suggest themselves, I may jot them down for any reader who cares to pursue them. I do not, however, feel myself under any obligation to satisfy the pedantic, appease the intransigent or provide the pusillanimous with the safety-net of certainty. Let the sedulous apes of academia undertake such a task: I have more important matters in hand.

Like a man upon the shore of a vast and uncharted continent, I make my way into the forests of the interior. And you? Will you hang back, fearful for want of map and compass? Or will you trust your safety to the rifle of my intellect and the cutlass of your own, and — turn the page?
