Today I would like all of you to share the worst fanfictions known to man!

Hey, /lit/. It's 12:15 AM PST and I'm exhausted, but I refuse to go to bed without finishing this sentence (I'm writing another chapter in a big-ass book I've been working on since Halloween, at least).
All I need to know is the word that describes an object used to channel energy from one source to another; in this case, a wizard using a wand (it's a Harry Potter parody piece, of sorts).

Bumping with Harry Potter-related pics

So I'm planning on writing an original fictional story. Problem is, I want to describe what some of my characters wear. I'm more experienced with watching television and movies than reading books, so I want to try a more 'visual' method of displaying my characters to the audience.

For instance, instead of saying "Margaret is a goth" I want to say something akin to "Margaret showed up wearing a long black frilly dress and small polished black shoes".

But this writing style reminds me of a lot of bad fanfiction such as My Immortal which distract the audience with their overly drawn out and elaborate descriptions of characters' clothing.

How do I describe my characters' appearance thoroughly enough without distracting the audience and damaging the flow of the writing?
