tl;dr: Nietzsche had a crisis at the start of his career, which (according to himself) he got out of with Schopenhauer's guidance; this crisis was immediately preceded by becoming intimate friends with one of Stirner's close friends. Nietzsche was at the time also interested by the Young Hegelians and read some of them, and had to be aware of Stirner because books he throughly read mentioned him; however he himself never mentions Stirner, even when others call on their similarities, and his (crazy) sister was insistent on making sure people deny Nietzsche knew of him.

Stirner was the Abyss that gazed into Nietzsche.
