Which book or source would you refer to someone who has just started studying philosophy and want to read Nietzsche? From what I've heard so far his writing is not easy to understand for a beginner.

Request for Philosophy book recommendations for 14yo with autism
u/autismparent2017
All,

My 14 yr old who is savant-like on the autism spectrum is interested in philosophy. The story I like to tell is that I checked his phone when he was 12 and found 20 wikipedia pages open on Jeremy Bentham, David Hume, John Locke, etc.

A far cry from my Jr High where the faux-intellectual kids like myself read existentialists- and didn't understand them.

On a whim I bought him two books which I thought reminded me of the videogames he plays- Sun Tzu's Art of War and Machiavelli's The Prince. Only this Fall did he really take to them- and carries them everywhere.

Also on a whim I bought him the following books:

Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations

Thomas Paine, Common Sense

Julius Caesar, Gallic War

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Clausewitz, On War

I am looking for recommendations for slim volumes of classic original philosophy from the Greeks to the 19th Century that would have an appeal to a serious-minded videogamer. I think I can cover the tangentially philosophical books (Economics and strategy) and hoped you all might have suggestions on pure philosophy books

Is there criteria to feeling existential dread? Do you have to be well read and actually understand what it is? Do you just generally have to be a thoughtful person and think about life a lot? Nobody I know has ever talked about it, even my good friends who are very intelligent.

And I'm not talking about moaning and groaning about 'life is so hard' and 'nothing matters,' I'm talking true onsets of dread. Idk how many of you have had it, but its basically a realization that one day you're going to die and nothing will be left hits you, and it hits hard. Comes out of seemingly nowhere sometimes. I've only had it three times, and once was because I was thinking about death/the afterlife a lot that day. Other two were seemingly random. Makes you feel very hopeless and introspective for a bit. It's really a strange and unique feeling.

You can read Jung, or you can read the philosopher whose original insights he lifted & distorted into a mishmash of christian theology and new age spiritualism
